Coaches Are Not Just for Athletes

No matter where a person is in life there is always a desire for more - more money, more success, more free time, closer relationships, deeper meaning, and so on. It’s just human nature, and we all struggle with this phenomenon.

Early on we are taught that good old fashioned hard work is the key to finding the life, success, money, or happiness we are seeking; so we pay the heavy price of poor health and strained relationships in search of what we want. What’s sad is that even though all our efforts result in more of something, it’s just not the something we had in mind, pushing us further from our true intentions.

Well aware of this detail, athletes know they need someone else to help them stay focused. Someone to help them set proper goals to work effectively toward excellence. They recognize the importance of a coach or teacher. No serious athlete would expect to progress very far without one.

A life coach is similar to a sports coach. They are a partner in helping you achieve your goals, both professionally and personally. A coach holds you accountable, making sure you live up to your full potential.

Individuals who hire the support of a coach are those wanting to take a more effective and focused approach to improve the quality of their life. They are tired of putting up with what’s dragging them down.

Coaching works because the combined effort of coach and client creates momentum. A coach provides the tools, support, and structure to help you accomplish that which you seek. More importantly, a coach helps set achievable and realistic goals that create a natural flow towards what you have set your sight on.

More and more people are tired of settling for less and are ready to reach for the brass ring, or go in search of that special something that will give meaning to their life. The problem is that most do not know where to start, and cannot see a way to turn their life around. A life coach is not a miracle worker, but they do have a large tool kit to help clients realize their dreams.

If you are striving to optimize your performance or just need that extra push, a personal or executive coach may be just what you need. In your search, consider the following:

  • Get their credentials. Find out where they received their certification, then do a little online research.
  • Ask for references. Word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertising. If they can’t provide you with referrals, that should raise a red flag.
  • Not all life coaches are the same or do the same. Decide what area of your life you wish to improve, then find a coach that specializes in that area. In your quest, a few coach titles you’ll run across are: life, personal, professional, career, executive, business, and corporate. However, don’t let the title fool you; do your homework.
  • Hiring a life coach is a commitment. Make sure you are ready to commit the time and willingness to do what is required to accomplish your goal. Keep in mind, old habits die hard and your coach will challenge that.

An athlete recognizes the level of commitment and personal sacrifice it takes to achieve excellence in their sports. As with anything in life worth having, this philosophy also applies.
